These portraits represent aspects of the culture of the University over time, serving as vignettes of the University's concerns and priorities throughout its history. Diversity of this collection is a continual process that has already begun.

The Edwin Aylsworth Burlingame Collection of Rhode Island Artists' paintings was donated to Brown University by the wife and daughter of Edwin Aylsworth Burlingame following his death in 1941.

The world outside Providence grew to know Brown University during its first hundred years through a succession of printed views of the campus. View the collection currently at the Gardner House.
