The Burlingame Collection

The Edwin Aylsworth Burlingame Collection of Rhode Island Artists' paintings was donated to Brown University by the wife and daughter of Edwin Aylsworth Burlingame following his death in 1941.

Mr. Burlingame assembled the collection of small paintings by artists who were his contemporaries and personal friends while President of the Providence Art Club. President Henry Wriston used this gift of original artwork to decorate the offices of the newly-renovated University Hall.

Though never a student, Edwin Burlingame had a long association with Brown. His career at Brown began in 1904 when he took on the role of Superintendent of Grounds and Buildings. Later, in 1917, he assumed the newly established position of Comptroller. He briefly acted as Treasurer during 1933-34, then served as Assistant Treasurer from 1934 until his retirement in 1936. He was awarded an honorary S.B. degree from Brown in 1914. Beyond his professional life, Burlingame was actively involved in various clubs and organizations. His significant contributions as chair of the Metropolitan Park Commission were commemorated with the dedication of the Burlingame State Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island.
